Amelia Fong
DR. AMELIA FONG is an award-winning Ophthalmologist and Oc-uloplastic Surgeon and has been at the helm of Aina Haina Eye Center (“AHEC”) since 2017. She is currently one of only two female Oculoplastic Surgeons in Hawaii, and sees patients from across the state, referred by many of her patients and other doctors.
Dr. Fong offers comprehensive services from routine eye exams to premium cataract surgery (laser-assisted cataract surgery and multifocal lenses), as well as treatment for eye injuries, diabetic eyes, dry eye, glaucoma, and other eye diseases. As an Oculoplastic Surgeon she is also able to treat conditions such as droopy eyelids, eye bags, droopy brows, inward/outward turning of the eyelids, and other issues dealing with the orbit (eye socket) and tear duct system (excessive tearing and block-age). Dr. Fong is trained to evaluate and treat thyroid eye disease patients both medically and surgically and performs biopsies of suspicious lesions on the eyelids and Mohs reconstructive surgeries. She also offers facial fillers and botox injections for cosmetic as well as medical indications such as blepharospasms, hemifacial spasms, and migraines.
Optometrist Janet Tham, O.D. is also part of her friendly team, allowing AHEC to offer vision exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses, so AHEC really is a full-service practice for the entire family, from keiki to kupuna.
Dr. Fong enjoys all aspects of Ophthalmology and she especially loves the “art” of Oculoplastics.
“I love what I do!” said Dr. Fong. “Helping people see better is one of the most rewarding feelings. And if I can help someone look better and feel more positive and confident about themselves, that’s a double bonus!”
Dr. Fong graduated from Punahou with honors and summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsyvania. She returned home to attend the University of Hawaii John A Burns School of Medicine (“JABSOM”), and completed her Ophthalmology training at the Georgetown/Medstar Washington Hospital Center. She then finished a highly competitive Oculoplastics fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern where she served as an associate professor.
Dr. Fong also volunteers with various medical organizations and supports numerous local charities, and is currently the treasurer for the Hawaii Ophthalmology Society and a volunteer clinical educator at JABSOM. She is also an avid surfer and she, husband Jon, and son Jaxon love going to the beach. Dr. Fong credits her parents, Wesley and Linda Fong, for all their support and encouragement over the years.
