An innovator, entrepreneur and self-declared pragmatist, Dr. Kore Kai Liow’s passion is to create opportunities and challenge the status quo. He is a nationally sought-after key opinion leader with over 50 peer-reviewed PubMed publications and has served on national advisory panels for the CDC, AMA, AAN and more.
Born in Penang Island, Malaysia, and raised in Singapore, Dr. Liow found his calling during fellowship training at the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Washington DC, where he saw how research could change the lives of those suffering from chronic, incurable neurological conditions.
Following a successful career as an academic research neurologist, in 2009 Dr. Liow and his wife moved to Hawaii with plans to retire. However, seeing the immense local need for neuroscience services here, they took on a new mission and put their lifelong savings into establishing Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience. Today, HPN has a national reputation as a top-performing site, caring for more than 20,000 patients across the Pacific region annually. It has brought more than 150 groundbreaking neuroscience research therapies to benefit Hawaii’s patients, who no longer need to travel to the Mainland to receive quality, cutting-edge care.
HPN’s team of 50-plus staff members are committed to Dr. Liow’s mission of giving back, whether by caring for those who need it the most, regardless of insurance, or by mentoring future physicians in clinical rotations and research projects.
Dr. Liow currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Neurology) and Graduate Faculty in Clinical and Translational Research at UH JABSOM, where he received the 2021 John M. Hardman, M.D. Award for Mentoring in Teaching.
