How do I lower my risk for kidney stones?
Kidney stones are hard, spherical mineral deposits that form inside the kidney or urinary tract. It is relatively common, with 1 in 20 people developing the condition some time in their lives and those with certain medical conditions, such as gout, are more susceptible. While most stones are non-life-threatening and eventually pass through the system, the experience is often very painful. Prevention of kidney stones depends partly on the particular type of the stone; however, dehydration plays a major role in the formation of all types of kidney stones, so staying well-hydrated and avoiding salt in the diet is particularly helpful in lowering kidney stone risks. Lemon juice added to water provides an additional benefit.
