Lines in the Sand
You flip through the pages to find your horoscope: Embrace change. You love nothing more than lingering over a newspaper with a cup of coffee — except, of course, noticing a cute new boutique right next to your favorite caffeine stop.
You may recognize the Sand People sign hanging outside the shop right next to Morning Brew in Kailua Shopping Center. The beachy chic store has a few sister locations scattered throughout the state, including one in Waikiki. But owners Scott and Laura Phillipson are embracing change too. You won’t find the same touristy gift items and memorabilia here.
The Lanikai residents wanted to establish what they call a “true boutique,” focused on clothing and accessories. They’ve filled their racks with fashions from brands like Three Dots, Splendid, Free People, Maraketch and Hard Tail. Last week, they added new hats, belts and printed canvas and leather handbags.
Cases of jewelry line the walls, and a peek inside reveals work from local designers, just as carefully curated as the clothing. You’ll find crystal-etched shell earrings, delicate wrap bracelets made of entwined leather and silver, chunky silver rings and sea glass strung on chains.
The Phillipsons did carry over one thing from their other location — the sweet kama‘aina discount. Locals can get 15 percent off from December 1 to 15 and 20 percent off on their birthday.
All shore signs of a stylish future ahead.
