Lei Chic’s Weekend Picks: 6 Stylish Things To Do
Enjoy your Labor Day holiday! Here are the best things to do this weekend.

Shop
Go Mad
What: Bonkers, cuckoo, nuts. Yep, we’re going mad for the prospect of the Mikinola sale this weekend at the Mikinola showroom in town. Not only are you getting a seriously awesome chance to score 75 percent off some of the hottest brands right now, including One Teaspoon, Indah, Gypsy, Stone Fox Swim and Minkpink, you don’t even have to drive out to Hawai‘i Kai. You’ll also find pieces by S.Tory Standards, Cynthia Vincent, Faithfull … the list goes on and on. Let’s just say your back-to-school shopping will be done after this weekend.
When: Friday, Sept. 4, 2–6 p.m.
Where: 1311 Kapi‘olani Blvd., Suite 308
Details: Call 394-6666 for more information.
Attend
Talk Story
What: We absolutely fell in love with Boy, a coming-of-age film set in New Zealand—and not just for the Michael Jackson references (although that was a big win). Today, Maori director Taika Waititi is teaming up with Ma‘o and Piko Project for the Mana Moana: Pacifika Storytelling Through Land and Film event, where attendees will be treated to a screening of Boy, as well as some of Waititi’s powerful short films, and a discussion about the complexity and connection between indigeneity, community and storytelling in today’s world. A feast for your eyes and your mind? We’re there.
When: Friday, Sept. 4, 5–9 p.m.
Where: University of Hawai‘i at West ‘Oahu, Room C-208
Details: Contact the Piko Project at 689-2683 for more information.

Shop
On the Road
What: Another long weekend, another beautiful jewelry trunk show to shop ourselves into holiday bliss. Blue Bird Jewelry Hawai‘i will be setting up shop at ‘Ōhelo Road this weekend for a pretty-as-can-be pop-up of designer Jana Higa’s beautiful bracelets, dangling earrings and delicate necklaces. We’re still bonkers over her lariat-style necklace design and T-shaped druzy chain. Sounds pretty good, right?
When: Monday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Where: ʻŌhelo Road, Kāhala Mall
Details: Visit bluebirdjewelryhawaii.com to see more of Higa’s work.

Face Time
What: Holiday weekends mean time to recharge. But while you’re sleeping in for an extra hour (OK, maybe two hours), your poor skin is still thirsting for its own little refresh button. Head to Ho‘āla Salon and Spa for its latest skin-care event to take care of that. You can treat your face to a complimentary, nourishing and revitalizing Skin Balancing ritual, which uses Aveda’s latest skincare products. Then, check out the new fall/winter makeup collection, Sublime Spirit. The event is by limited appointments only, so sign up now.
When: Friday, Sept. 4, Saturday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7.
Where: Ho‘āla Salon and Spa, Ala Moana Center
Details: Sign up for an appointment by calling 947-6141.

Good Evening
What: Everything is awesome! Especially since we’ll be going to this weekend’s activity-packed Sunset Mele on the Rooftop, which will feature a screening of the hilarious The Lego Movie, as well as entertainment by Kuikahi and John Feary. No coolers are allowed, but the Sunset Mele Marketplace will be stocked with hot dogs and popcorn for purchase, alongside booths from artisans and crafters. Bring your own low beach chairs, mats and blankets.
When: Sunday, Sept. 6, 5–9 p.m.
Where: Event admission is free. Parking is $5. Hawai‘i Convention Center, 1801 Kalākaua Ave.
Details: Call 943-3025 for more information.

Hot Shot
What: When you think “street style,” chances are you think of Tommy Ton’s name, the fashion photographer who gained international attention with his work on sites such as style.com. Now that style.com has shuttered its digital doors, Ton is branching off on his own with tommyton.com, launched this week. Browse some of Ton’s iconic, gorgeous images and get inspired just in time for New York Fashion Week, where Ton will be on the street doing what he does best: snagging those chic shots.
