Raise the Jar: Overnight Oats
Today marks the launch of a new DIY series exploring the many ways to use one of our favorite household objects, the mason jar, which you can pick up at most grocery and drugstores.
Here in the office, we've coined a new term: hangry, the condition of an editor when she skips a meal and transforms into a total drama queen (hungry+angry=hangry).
Symptoms tend to appear mid-morning and are typically preceded by an alarm malfunction, misplaced keys, and/or fussy kids. So, we developed our own overnight oats: a simple, no-cook breakfast that can be prepared in a jar the night before and snatched out of the fridge on our way out the door. The recipe is arguably tastier than regular oatmeal (less mushy, more hearty), and today, we're sharing it with you.

Lei Chic's Overnight Oats
- 1/3 cup plain or Greek yogurt
- 1 Tbsp. honey
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk (regular, soy, or almond)
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/8 cup finely chopped nuts
- 1/4 cup berries and/or sliced bananas
Combine yogurt, honey and vanilla extract in a mason jar. Stir in milk until smooth. Add oats and nuts. Cover and leave in fridge overnight. If oatmeal is too thick the next morning, add a splash of milk. Top with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey (optional, to taste).
Note: Feel free to play with the recipe – use whatever fruit you have on hand, substitute maple syrup for honey, add a sprinkle of cinnamon, flax or chia seeds. If using frozen berries, add them the night before so they can thaw.
