Kapulani Landgraf’s Powerful Tribute to Haunani-Kay Trask
HoMA unveils the photographic installation ʻAuʻa
Now on view at the Honolulu Museum of Art is Kapulani Landgraf: ‘Au‘a. Black-and-white portraits of Kanaka ‘Ōiwi community leaders fill a gallery as a recording of scholar and activist Haunani-Kay Trask crying “We are not American!” plays. It is a powerful statement on Hawaiian identity and resilience.
The installation opened on the anniversary of the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and continues through Sept. 29. Monthly programs on the third Sunday of the month provide a forum for meaningful dialog, reflection and understanding while centering Native Hawaiian voices and perspectives.
