We Tried It: Kāne‘ohe Bay Air Show
Blue Angels Kaneohe Air Show
Packed with kid-friendly activities, rides, and attractions, the Kāne‘ohe Bay Air Show is a fun, free event for the whole family.
I’ve taken my clan in years past and had a great time, even as babies and toddlers. The annual, two-day event offers lots to explore, with carnival rides, bouncy houses, a car show, games and demonstrations, and real airplane displays that allow kids to climb into the pilot’s seat while parents snap adorable pics. Plus, there’s tons of food and drinks from local vendors. My kids loved the fair grub and shave ice, while my husband and I checked out the beer tent.
Oh, right…and there’s an air show. With aerobatic performances from the Blue Angels, world-famous pilots, skydivers, and more, there’s plenty to gawk at. Even if you’re an aviation dunce like me (admittedly, I’m more into Project Runway than actual runways), you’ll still appreciate the spectacle. My heart skipped a beat every time the pilots pulled off their daredevil stunts. It’s an amazing sight.
A few “mom” tips, if you go:
1. Bring lots of water and sunscreen. It’s hot, and there’s not a lot of shade. We grabbed lunch and sat under the shade of an airplane wing, and my daughter got a huge kick out of that.
2. Plan to give yourself some time. It’s not something you can swing into and out of quickly. You need to park on base and take a free bus ride over, which impatient parents may grumble at, but my kids were actually thrilled by this. (See maps on official website, below.)
3. The jets are extremely loud. Most kids cover their ears when they fly by, but you may want to bring ear protection.
4. You can bring purses and diaper bags, but no large bags or coolers. You are allowed to bring strollers (which I highly recommend) or wagons. You can also bring folding chairs and umbrellas, but if you have little ones, you’ll likely do more roaming than sitting.
5. Hit up the souvenir stand. My kids still love the toy airplanes we picked up last year.
6. Be prepared to wear your kids out. This outing will make for some good naps later. Same goes for you, if you’re lucky.
