Sue Chipperton Presentation

What do Marmaduke, Godzilla, the Aflac duck and the Taco Bell Chihuahua have in common? No, they’re not making cameos in The Expendables 3 (but we wouldn’t be surprised if they did). They were all trained by master animal-whisperer Sue Chipperton. Wait … does that mean Godzilla is real?

King Kamehameha Floral Parade and Hoolaulea

Did you know? Kamehameha Day was proposed to honor King Kamehameha V on his birthday, Dec. 11. Rather than take the honor himself, the then-reigning king chose to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha the Great, on June 11, as far away from his own birthday as possible. That’s why people are draping lei on the big, golden statue instead of a statue of King Kamehameha V. The lei-draping ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. June 11 in front of Aliiolani Hale, with the parade and hoolaulea on Saturday.

Battle of Midway Commemoration

For almost 70 years, a World War II Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress lay intact in the Agaiambo swamp in Papua New Guinea, crash-landed by its crew after being damaged by Japanese fighters. Now the Swamp Ghost is coming back to life. Restoration manager Jim Martinelli will give a behind-the-scenes look at its restoration since coming to Ford Island in 2013. The afternoon kicks off with a presentation by Martinelli along with curator/author Burl Burlingame on the Battle of Midway.

Last year, the Hawaii Kai Lions Club used about 600 pounds of pancake mix for its annual Father’s Day breakfast at Kaiser High School. The 41st annual breakfast will be held June 15, 6:30–10:30 a.m.
