HONOLULU Magazine and Paradise of the Pacific, chronicling the Islands since 1888.

Jan. 1936: "Pan American Airways clippers now fly the full breadth of the world’s greatest ocean," announces Paradise of the Pacific, predecessor to HONOLULU Magazine, photo above. "The great sky boats have reduced weeks and months of Pacific spanning to hours and days since clipper ships wooed the winds for ocean plowing." The total travel time from California to Hawai’i, thanks to this innovation in travel? "Eighteen hours!" Paradise exclaims. "Why, one might breakfast within the Golden Gate and be in Honolulu for a late dinner!"

Jan. 1971: Although anchorman Bob Sevey doesn’t go on air till 6 p.m., he’s in his KGMB office by 8:30 a.m., according to a HONOLULU cover story of Hawai’i’s top-rated TV broadcaster. "’It’s the only way I can get a feel of what’s going on—to know how the day is shaping up,’" Sevey says, photo right. "He makes phone calls. He runs down the hall to a room full of spools and strips of films. He orders a photographer on an assignment. ‘Really, I’m just a dispatcher. I should be working for a taxi company,’" he says. On another note, part of Sevey’s news team at the time was sportscaster Al Michaels, current co-host of Monday Night Football.
