When judging our Annual Photo Contest, the entries are always kept anonymous, to keep things fair. So it was a surprise, after picking our favorite shot, to learn the name of this year’s grand prize winner: Philippe Gross, the same photographer who won last year with a black-and-white shot of swimmers in a oceanside pool. For this year’s “Honolulu After Dark” theme, he submitted something a bit more oblique—the reflected image of his girlfriend in the Admiral Thomas building. “I didn’t plan it,” he says. “I’m always looking around my surroundings for photo opportunities, and I stepped out of the elevator and saw these reflections, and I knew.” Gross says that, as a psychologist, he’s interested in the psychological aspect of photography, and in finding multiple layers of meaning in an image. “Most of the time, a photo just shows what’s in front of you,” he says. “It’s harder to suggest something more complex.”

The first place winner receives $250, and the winning photo will be published in the the January 2013 issue of HONOLULU Magazine.
