This sailor’s paradise tucked away in Kāne‘ohe calls itself a “residential yachting community” and, well, that’s exactly what it is. Each of the townhomes in Makani Kai has its own deeded slip in the marina that fronts the property. It’s a full-fledged yacht marina, with slips that range from 28 to 50 feet long, most being 34 feet.

The residences are nestled underneath a canopy of elephant-ear and monkeypod trees on a gentle sloping hillside overlooking Kāne‘ohe Bay. Many have ocean views, and none are more than a five-minute walk from their associated boat slip. There are a mix of sailboats and motorboats, and the common area includes a pool that overlooks the marina and a yacht club—complete with burgees and a commodore. Charts of Kāne‘ohe Bay line the walls. Even the website is better than those of most private yacht clubs.

Not surprisingly, these homes come on the market rarely, and owners are often solicited by buyers looking to get in. Right now, there’s a three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit listed for $775,000. It’s more than 1,500 square feet and has a large lānai and even a private yard. And it comes with a 34-foot slip—ideal for a quick run out to the sandbar for sunset whenever the mood strikes.
