Honolulu’s newest Target opens today at Ala Moana Center and being the intrepid style scouts we are (and major Tar-Jay fans) we stopped by for a sneak peek. Located in the space formerly occupied by Nordstrom, the new location (Hawai‘i’s seventh) had a soft opening today at 8 a.m., with a grand opening scheduled for this Sunday, Oct. 22 at 8 a.m.

You’ll notice right off the bat that this Target is formatted a little differently than its O‘ahu counterparts. At 139,500 square feet it’s not quite as big as the brand’s standard size stores but is larger than its small-format stores. It’s also the Island’s first in-mall location with a whopping three levels. The top two are dedicated to shopping and snacking while the bottom (accessible only from the Ke‘eaumoku St. entrance) serves as a mini gallery space showcasing the works of local artist Kris Goto, whose eye-catching graphic prints brighten up walls throughout the store.

Another big difference is the sheer volume of tourist-geared products. The AMC Target is home to the largest aloha and beach sections we’ve seen. Enter on the second level and you’ll be met with an abundance of tropical-print aloha shirts, sarongs and swimwear, beach gear for days, plus a ton of souvenirs and locally made food items.

Also on the second floor are the womenswear, menswear and keiki clothing and toy sections, along with homewares, office supplies, electronics and kitchen supplies. The AMC Target carries all the same lines as the other Targets on island, so you can pick up that A New Day midi skirt you’ve been eyeing and support local brands like Benay Hawai‘i and Lahaina Town Surf Company, which raises money for the Boys and Girls Club of Maui and maintains free programs for keiki. We’re excited about the new Target-exclusive JoyLab activewear collection for women, which touts its pieces as perfect for going from crunches to brunches. And for the UH Mānoa fans, there’s an entire aisle dedicated to our favorite home team, with everything from wick-dry tees to travel mugs.

The third floor hosts an abundance of produce, a Longs Drugs Pharmacy, a Starbucks café and the largest selection of liquor of any Target store on O‘ahu (you know it’s big when there’s a sign that simply reads “More Reds”). The store is also stocked with holiday goodies for festive go-getters who want to start early.
