Romance is in the air this season as designers send one airy confection after another floating down spring 2014’s runways. Here in the Islands, the sentiment is echoed in the work of local designer Feliz Salas, a 2012 graduate of UH Manoa’s fashion program who has a knack for dreaming up amazing, one-of-a-kind designs. Exhibit A, The White Queen, the enchanting gown Salas created a few months back as part of HiSAM’s Fashion As Art event. It swept us off our feet, and then lingered on our minds for months, like a schoolgirl crush.
If the gown feels straight out of a fairy tale, it’s because it is. Salas drew her inspiration from Jadis, the beautiful but nefarious White Witch in C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. Among the bewitching details are layers of gorgeous, frothy chiffon, tulle and organza that make up the overlay and train, and a smattering of whimsical ostrich feathers, individually hand-sewn onto the garment and fanned out over the shoulders in a dramatic, tie-on capelet. Underneath lies a structured, figure-skimming sheath with a built-in bodice. It all adds up to a fitting juxtaposition of soft and strong, delicate and dangerous.
