Getting to the Point

Driving to the end of Black Point past the security gate, I was amazed to see how different the neighborhood looked from anyplace else on Oahu. Its location and views on the "point" of the island, as well as the look of the homes, made me feel like I had been transported to a New England town.

At the very end, 4162 Black Point Rd., there’s a stunning home for sale that takes in that New England feel and adds an island flair. Built in 1926, it has nautical touches throughout that give a nod to the seafaring lifestyle of that era. There’s koa wood everywhere – the floors, the stairs, the walls, the ceilings – more koa than I’ve ever seen in a Hawaii home. It was probably easier to obtain such a vast quantity of koa back when it was done; it would be virtually impossible to replicate this in a home today without breaking the bank.

That’s not to say this 4,328 square foot house looks old. It underwent a major remodel in 1982 and an update a few years ago, so it has a contemporary feeling throughout.

The property itself sits on 21,000 square feet of land, of which 155 linear feet is its ocean frontage. Due to its spot on Black Point, you get an unobstructed ocean view on one side and a view of East Honolulu’s city lights on the other. (Here’s a quick video to show you the view.)

That view is everything: four of the five bedrooms upstairs have an ocean view, and the downstairs area highlights it with floor-to-ceiling glass panels along that entire side so you can enjoy it every minute that you’re there.

I was so smitten by the home, I forgot to take a look at the separate guest cottage. A realtor who had visited before me was so overwhelmed by it, she forgot her purse and drove off (she eventually came back).

By the way, it will be sold fully furnished, so all you have to do is bring your clothes and move in.
