Here’s Where You Can Get a Lucky Fukubukuro Bag on O‘ahu
From Dec. 28 through Jan. 4., more than 100 retailers will be offering deeply discounted grab bags filled with surprise merchandise.
Editor’s Note: This post has been updated for the December 2025 to January 2026 Fukubukuro period.
As the holiday season winds down, there’s one big shopping event left on the calendar. Celebrated the last week of December and first week of January, Fukubukuro is the Japanese tradition that ushers in a New Year filled with good fortune and prosperity through the purchase of “lucky bags.” Retailers offer sealed bags filled with mystery merchandise at deeply discounted prices—contents are often worth double the cost or more. And nowadays, Japanese stores aren’t the only participants—local and national brands are also getting in on the fun, which means there are ton of amazing deals to be had.
