Enchanting, historical Nuuanu

Older Nuuanu homes always have a different kind of charm that you won’t find in any other part of the island. Maybe it’s the rainforest setting, or simply the people who originally owned the properties … whatever the case, you won’t find cookie-cutter homes in this area.
This new listing, which is open today from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., has its own stream running through the property. Since the stream is between the street and the front door, the owners designed it so you have to cross a short bridge to get to the house.

The stream, and its lush location, provide features that are common for Nuuanu homes. Breezes flow through thescreened lanai and the open layout, and the sound of the waterfall creates a relaxing ambience.

The 1,712-square-foot, two-story home is 45 years old, but has nicely upgraded its three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The lot is 7,449 square feet. (Click here for details.)

One fun thing about these historical properties: they come with fun reminders of Hawaii’s—and America’s—quirky pasts. The property was purchased by Percy Martin Pond and his wife Edith Eldridge Pond from the Dowsett Company Ltd. in 1936. The original deed fromthat time specifies that the property cannot be used for certain purposes, including saloon, poor house, prison or jail, poi shop, slaughter house, brewery, distillery or candy shop. Since this was created during the Prohibition Era, the deed forbids the sale of malt, vinous, spirituous or intoxicating liquors or any kind; however, the good news is, it doesn't forbid the consumption of alcohol, a restriction that can also be found in some older deeds. These deed restrictions run with the property and are as binding today as they were when they were first created.

If you buy this home, make sure you pour a glass of champagne and toast to the Dowsetts for their liberal deed!
