The current owners bought the lot, which originally had an older home on it, and tore it down. From there, they worked with renowned architect John Hara to design a new home, and Armstrong Builders built it in 2002. It’s listed on Armstrong’s website as “Hawaiian mixed with Asian feel.”

Despite its size, it’s very private. It’s located down a lane off Kahala Avenue and is surrounded on the mauka side with a private driveway gate and privacy walls. The front of the home has a huge, open lawn that goes down to the beach, with a low hedge across the front with a path to the sand.

The home is L-shaped and has 5,838 square feet of living area, and 2,175 square feet of “other roofed area.” There are high ceilings throughout the residence, with one exception to the single-level design: an oceanfront library built with display cabinetry and stairs that lead to a “catwalk” and more display cabinets.

Its large, rectangular pool with automatic cover and pool bath is located behind the home in a large courtyard. The covered outdoor dining area features an authentic pizza oven, which is a fun element. The kitchen looks a little industrial; it’s probably meant for large parties, as it’s designed with commercial style equipment such as an Imperial brand gas stove and cooktop, stainless steel countertops, refrigerator drawers and a commercial Hobart dishwasher in addition to a KitchenAid dishwasher. A large wine cellar that holds 1,500 to 2,000 bottles is off the garage.

The guest quarters consist of a living room with kitchen area and one bedroom and has a separate entrance from the main house.

There are “only” five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms in this gigantic home. The master suite faces the ocean and features a large bath area with double sinks, double enclosed toilets, and a large room with dressing area. The biggest appeal in the master bath is the glass-enclosed, combination shower/furo soaking tub.
