Double your zen in Lanikai

I've seen quite a few homes in Lanikai that infuse elements of nature to bring even more peacefulness into their already tranquil oases. This one—which was open yesterday—didn't have to add much more. (Click here for details.)

Kehaulani Dr. is nestled deep into Lanikai and up a cul-de-sac away from the busy loop and past the main beach access frequented by tourists and locals. It's still close enough for you to walk to the beach, but far enough to escape the traffic.

This home sits on a 14,159-square-foot double lot on the hillside and has a yard that looks like something straight out of a storybook: tall, twisty trees with tropical foliage; colorful island plants and flowers; and spacious lawn, all accessorized with a swing, benches, and curving pathway.  A natural swimming pool and a meandering flowing stream were added in 2002.

The 2,812-square-foot house has four bedrooms, of which two are master suites, and three bathrooms. The second story master suite has partial views of the ocean and Mokulua Islands, high ceilings, and a stone fireplace for cozy evenings (yes, it can get cold in Hawaii).

The home was built in 1944, so you get a classic design reminiscent of old Hawaii, but it was remodeled in 2000 to bring it up to date with modern touches. It features bamboo and slate floors, plantation shutters, home-wide sound and security systems, new refrigerator, extended eaves, outdoor beach shower, sprinkler system, lots of closet and storage space, and a flagstone driveway.

Being in Hawaii, you can't help but add Asian touches throughout, so you'll find bamboo walls and shoji closet doors here.  A seamless kitchen window and enclosed lanai contribute to the Zen atmosphere by bringing the outdoors in, and vice versa.
