Crepe Expectations

Perfectly thin, cool European style, and a sweet disposition – sounds like one you’d love to hate.

But it’s hard not to fall for the creations at Crepes No Ka Oi, the new creperie and café in Kailua.

Owners Chris and Rosario Tarvyd finally opened the cafe after their crepe stand became a runaway hit at fairs and festivals around the island. The duo, whose first date was at a creperie in Rosario’s native Philippines, modeled their business after the crepe trucks in Papeete, Tahiti – where Chris spent many childhood summers.

Their technique and recipes are lightened up for Hawai‘i (they don’t use the traditional béchamel sauce, for instance), and the menu offers more than 20 variations on the stuffed and rolled paper-thin pancakes. For breakfast, choose fillings like eggs, cheese and ham or turkey. For dessert, there’s Nutella, bananas and strawberries, or a simple melted butter/raw cane sugar combination. And for anytime in between, pick one of the savory crepes with veggies, ham or turkey and cheese.

The airy and bright café is open 'til 8 or 9 p.m. most nights, and you can dine in or take out.

Bon appetit!
