In the March issue of Jane magazine, Kate Torgovnick talks with Emilie de Ravin, a cast member on the televison show Lost, for tips on “how to avoid the tourists” on O‘ahu:
[F]or Emilie de Ravin, who plays Claire on Lost, Honolulu isn’t the best part of the island. “It’s a bit like Vegas on the beach,” the actress explains. She prefers hanging out in the smaller villages, where she can relax by a tropical waterfall. “It’s refreshing to find a place that has so much untouched paradise,” Emilie says. Here’s the scoop on favorite spots she’s discovered, so you too can live like a local. Folk-art shops. “Bone carving is really big here—they carve the bone into a flower shape.” Polynesian Cultural Center. “Good for souvenirs, like the kukui nuts that men wear as leis.” Nick’s Fishmarket. “Nice steak and lobster, and the portions are huge.” Kahala Mandarin Oriental Resort [now renamed The Kahala Hotel & Resort].“The rooms are light and airy, as opposed to most hotels here, which haven’t been renovated since 1975 and have old cane furniture and drab flower blankets and there are beach and mountain views.” |
