Celebrations

This year, the East-West Center (EWC) turns 50. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the EWC was the brainchild of then-Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson and Hawai‘i Governor John A. Burns, who hoped that young scholars would learn what Johnson called, “the wisdom of two worlds.” Take a look back at EWC’s milestones.
 

And Honolulu Community College (HCC) turns 90 this year. An integral part of the University of Hawai‘i system, HCC started in 1920 as Territorial Trade School. Subjects taught included auto mechanics, carpentry and machine shop, and there were only 42 students. Later, the school added cosmetology, refrigeration, drafting, radio, baking, plumbing, masonry and auto body and repair.
