Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day This Weekend at Da Shop: Books + Curiosities

The Kaimukī bookseller hosts renowned authors, artisans and food vendors—plus great deals—on Saturday, April 30.

Presented by the American Booksellers Association, Independent Bookstore Day is a national one-day party held the last Saturday in April that celebrates independent bookstores across the country. On Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Da Shop: Books + Curiosities in Kaimukī will join the celebration by hosting renowned authors Jane Mount (Bibliophile: Diverse Spines, Chronicle Books) and Adam J. Kurtz (You are Here (For Now): A Guide to Finding Your Way, TarcherPerigee), as well as artisans and food vendors for a day of festivities and exclusive in-store gifts.

There are more details on that below, but first, to help celebrate that bibliophile spirit, here are three beloved books about books, bookstores and booksellers:

How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry

There’s an undeniable romance about a bookshop, isn’t there? This sweet novel is the quintessential independent bookstore tale: It’s an uplifting story about the power books have to connect, heal and give a spark of hope in challenging times. Of course, this inspiring narrative is set in an idyllic community bookshop so it’s no surprise that this book is a customer and staff favorite!

Jamise Harper, of Diverse Spines, and Jane Mount, of Ideal Bookshelf, collaborated to create this beautiful, empowering showcase of BIPOC storytellers, booksellers and book lovers. Treat your shelf to this visually stunning book illustrated by Maui artist Mount, whose coveted book spine illustrations are adored by bibliophiles everywhere. In Praise of Good Bookstores by Jeff Deutsch

Written by a “devoted reader and lifelong bookseller,” In Praise of Good Bookstores captures that deep satisfaction you feel when you step into a beautiful space made just for books. This is a great gift for book lovers about why we need brick-and-mortar bookstores in an age of expedient online shopping.  A short but insightful read that will warm your literary heart, illuminate the bookselling ecosystem, and make you feel a bit better about that ever-growing TBR pile.

These titles and more are available through Da Shop: Books + Curiosities. Don’t miss this once-a-year party that will also include local food vendors alongside artisans Beachcake by Mariko Merritt (who also works at Da Shop) and Jahier Studio by Chloé Selarque.
