Ian MacMillan passed away in 2008, but fans of the gifted author will be glad to learn that there’s a new novel hitting bookshelves. This posthumous release is a tightly plotted whodunit with a large cast of local characters, each drawn with MacMillan’s usual eye for detail. There’s reportedly one more MacMillan manuscript still sitting on the shelf, a piece of historical fiction, but for now, The Bone Hook is an unexpected gift to savor.

Tom Moffatt: 50 Years of Music in Hawaii

Multi-artist compilation albums are often a grab bag of B-list songs and album filler, but when local promotions legend Tom Moffatt puts together a career retrospective, it’s A-list all the way. The Beamer Brothers’ “Honolulu City Lights,” Don Ho’s “I’ll Remember You,” Kapena’s “Masese”—the list of artists with whom Moffatt has been involved is impressive. No one disc can be comprehensive, of course, but this is a pretty solid roundup of a half-century of Hawaii music.
