Starting today, various stores around Oahu will begin selling the pass good for 20 percent off 20 boutiques and designers’ websites until the end of September. The cost is five dollars, which will be donated to With Aloha.
The non-profit organization started in March to raise money for victims of the tsunami and earthquake that claimed nearly 20,000 lives. Six months later, pictures photographer Rich Lee just took in Japan show the story is not over; more than half of the 22.6 million tons of rubble left behind still has not been cleaned up. Rebuilding the 31 towns and villages destroyed in a few hours, if they're rebuilt at all, will take years if not decades.
Money raised from the shopping pass will go to non-profit groups currently working on the ground in Japan. So far, With Aloha has given $200,000 to Tohoku University Hospital, which has served as the main health treatment center in the hard hit area. Donations will go to replace valuable equipment damaged that day.
