Budget Friendly Development in Kapolei

For those familiar with the Nanala development in Kapolei, you will be delighted to hear about the fourth such development that D.R. Horton—Schuler division is planning in the same area.
Named Awakea, or “Midday Sun,” in Hawaiian, the development includes 115 two- and three-bedroom condominiums for sale, priced from the high $300,000s. Thirty of the homes for sale will be affordable homes, for those making 80 percent or less of median income.
Now for what is really cool and unique about this development: there will be 22 units which are termed “Flex Homes.” This “flex” or bonus room can be used for extended family, friends or even for business purposes.
Flex Homes are zoned AMX-2, which allow a variety of business activity, including financial services, medical clinics, personal services, eating establishments and dance or music schools. With a convenient separate entrance, these “flex rooms” can even be rented out for extra income.
I spoke with Brian Smith who bought a Flex Home in the original Nanala development, and he loves his space. He opened a coffee shop called Pray Eat Love Café, and has no complaints about his 11-step commute to work. “My coffee shop is a great way for neighbors to get to know one another and socialize. I love the layout of my space, and the low overhead my Flex Room allows me to have with my business is exactly what I was looking for.”
Previous D.R.Horton developments have appealed to first time and move-up buyers, but the Flex Homes specifically will appeal to families who desire ohana style living situations, and those who want to take advantage of living and working in virtually the same space.
For those interested in this property, sales start this Sunday, April 21.
