Bright Up a Room

Lei ChicGetting a free shot of syrup with your morning latte – Good.

Accidentally giving your girlfriend a dress a size too small – Bad.

Coming up with the perfect quip about your boss’s bad aloha shirt (who knew you could still find long sleeve?) in an e-mail to your friends – Good.

Accidentally sending it to your “work group” instead of your “wine group” – Bad.

A lot of your life is in black and white; or maybe shades of grey (see dating life). Every now and then, you need a splash of color to shake up your day.

That’s what you’ll find at Owens & Co. The new home and accessories store just opened in a long-abandoned storefront at the corner of Pauahi Street and Nuuanu Avenue.

Owner Missy Owens Mull has years of experience in retail merchandising, but really fell in love with color and fabrics. So when clothing store Theory closed, taking her job with it, she decided it was time to create her own dream store.

Owens Mull combed Etsy and blogs for the little-known finds joyfully scattered throughout the airy space: colorfully-painted glasses by New Arcadia Studio, a rainbow of patterned Kerry Cassill linens, Rifle Paper and Egg Press notecards, and even pillows she covered with hand-embroidered textiles from the Otomi Indians in Mexico.

And it’s not just about decorating your home. You’ll feel good as gold in the oddly cool bone-inspired jewelry from up-and-comer Bones and Feather, and the surprisingly delicate and feminine skull and moon necklaces from Michelle Chang.

There are also hand-poured candles, desktop-sized greens from Lanikai Pots and Plants, and the first issues of hard-to-find Bay-area-based home and lifestyle magazine Anthology.

It's the perfect gift stop to keep your boss from seeing red. Because if your silver tongue can’t get you out of trouble, at least you’ll have a chic way to brown nose.

Owens & Co. is located at 1152 Nuuanu Ave. Hours are Mon. – Fri. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information or to check out the latest offerings, click here.
