Briefing on Kakaako set for July 30

With so many Kakaako development plans in the works, it can be confusing to keep track of them all.

Even area lawmakers need some clarity. On July 30, they’re having the Hawaii Community Development Authority present information on all Kakaako projects, including a mix of residential high rises, retail space, parking garages and recreational areas.

Some of the projects have been raising ire because Kakaako residents are concerned about increased traffic congestion and, in some cases, obstructed views as more residential towers change the skyline.

More than 15 buildings have been proposed in Kakaako, which could lead to big changes in the areas near the Neal S. Blaisdell Center, the Victoria Ward Centers and the industrial area between Kapiolani and Ala Moana boulevards.

State and city lawmakers who represent Kakaako want answers to several questions, such as:

• How do the proposed developments fit into the state’s Kakaako Mauka master plan? Which proposals require variances or modifications? How will HCDA decide whether or not to grant exemptions?
• What are the differences between affordable and workforce housing? Is there a way to ensure that the units will remain affordable in the long-term?
• How will the rules regarding density, setbacks and height limitations be enforced?
