Almost every family in Hawaiʻi feels, or has felt, the strong influence of PATCH, a nonprofit advocate for child care services and early-childhood learning. That’s because PATCH trains individuals and groups to become licensed caregivers. And it refers families to reliable child care programs. And it’s the Department of Human Services’ licensed contractor to operate Preschool Open Doors, which helps eligible families pay for child care in the year prior to kindergarten.

Local families rely on the YMCA of Honolulu for A+ afterschool care and its early learning programs. Our readers selected YMCA for the best summer programs on the island. When most child care centers shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Y was still able to care for the kids of essential workers who could not stay home. When life returns to normal, we’re looking forward to hitting the gyms at the YMCAs, since complimentary child care is offered at all six locations with fitness amenities.
