Award-winning home on Judd Hillside

There are a lot of nice homes out there, but this one on Judd Hillside—between Makiki Heights and Manoa—made me stop in my tracks. I found out it was featured in HONOLULU Magazine several years ago, so if you were attracted to it back then, now’s your chance to own it. (Click here for details.)

The home was designed by renowned Honolulu architect Richard Bass, so it’s no wonder it won the BIA Grand Award in 2008. There are custom details throughout the property that give it Japanese style without being overdone, which is probably what sets it apart from other Asian-inspired houses.

The lot is quite large, at 10,076 square feet, so there's room for parking as well as a meticulously manicured Japanese garden, designed by Crane & Sekimizu. Bass planned his home design so that every window looks out at the garden.

The spacious, 3,296-square-foot residence has three bedrooms and two bathrooms with simple, yet very dramatic touches throughout both levels. Even the huge wraparound Brazilian Ipe wood deck makes the panoramic Diamond Head, city, and ocean views seem more breathtaking—probably due to the way it’s angled and framed.

The glass doors for the dining room and master bedroom all slide open so you can take advantage of the deck and view. The large living room is big enough to have a grand piano, which can be included in the sale.

There’s central air conditioning, a central sound system, and a high-tech security system, as well.
