An East O‘ahu Home With Panoramic Views of Kāhala to Wai‘anae
Open house pick of the week: A Wai‘alae Nui Ridge home owned by a KITV news anchor.

I regret not shooting video of KITV anchor Yunji de Nies as she took me on a little tour of her Wai‘alae Nui Ridge home this week, as it would have been well narrated, and probably would have shown how spectacular the property (and its view) really is. You can see it yourself this Sunday, though, since it’s our open-house pick of the week.
To enter most homes perched this high on the hill, you usually have to walk up or down an incline. However, this one’s entrance is level with the sidewalk, and, if you enter from the garage, you can carry your groceries straight into the kitchen through the side door.
De Nies and her husband, Kent Walther, finished remodeling in 2015, so, although the 2,308-square-foot home was built in 1965, there are modern Island touches from top to bottom. The kitchen, with its giant, granite-top island and new appliances, features soft-close doors and pull-out shelves to make cooking easier.
“It’s practically brand new, since I never cook,” de Nies says.
The kitchen opens to a spacious living/dining room with Brazilian-cherry-wood floors, with both rooms opening to the lānai so you can enjoy 180-degree ocean views from East to West O‘ahu. Actually, most rooms in the house have this panoramic view, so you could watch the New Year’s and July 4 fireworks from almost any spot.
Three of the bedrooms and two bathrooms are located on the main level. The downstairs suite, which has its own entrance, bathroom, kitchenette and lānai, can be closed off from the rest of the house for a rental or multifamily living. Currently, though, it’s being used as the master suite, and the large walk-in closet makes it extra deluxe.
There’s no pool on the 8,491-square-foot lot, but there’s ample yard space and 603 square feet of lānai for flexible indoor/outdoor living. In fact, Walther built a pagoda with wood from Bali in the area outside the master suite, so you can use it for yoga, meditation, outdoor meals or other quiet time away from the house.
The home also has a 27-panel photovoltaic owned system with net metering, which helps with electricity bills.
This listing will be open on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. Click here for details.
