All in the ohana

Aikahi is one of Kailua’s most sought-after neighborhoods, since it’s only half a mile from Kailuana and Kaimalino beaches, convenient to shopping and close to H-3. Home sales don’t turn over as quickly in this area, as there are people who have lived here for generations and love the stability and convenience.

This newer Aikahi listing is 49 years old, but recently remodeled—so while the simple, boxy exterior design reflects the era (and in some ways, the neighborhood) it was built in, the interior is über-modern. One good thing about an older home is having an established garden, and mature trees. Just outside the living room in the fenced yard, there are avocado, Kaffir lime, papaya and banana trees.

The renovation included ceramic tile, updated electrical wiring, a new roof and open-beam ceilings in the living room. The completely remodeled kitchen features granite counters, chestnut soft-close cabinetry, new appliances and a huge pantry.

There are six bedrooms and three bathrooms in this 2,672-square-foot home; the master suite is large, and the room down the hall from it gives you the option of having a two-bedroom master.

The biggest selling point on this home, though, is the two-bedroom ohana unit with its own entrance, full kitchen with bar top, and mountain views. According to realtor Leon Mosher, the property manager says this unit would rent for $2100 to $2300 per month, and the larger downstairs (should you choose not to live there) could rent for $4100 to $4300 per month. (Rental analysis is available.)

The ohana unit was built prior to 1992, so it can legally be rented. Such units built since 1992 are supposed to only be occupied by family. (Click here for details.)
