A Futuristic New Kiosk for Ballet Hawaii
After a careful judging process, local artistic think-tank Interisland Terminal has chosen a winner in its Competition for New Community Architecture.
The contest asked entrants to design a portable information kiosk for Ballet Hawaii to use at its performances, with the hope of sparking a new generation of exciting, forward-looking architecture in Hawaii.
The callout attracted entries from across the state, ranging from the fanciful to the practical. The winning concept splits the difference: Luke Altenau and Katie Coffman’s creative design draws inspiration from the abstracted profiles of ballet dancers, and uses tubular steel and reused sails to create a light and easily assembled kiosk.
Jurors said, “lovely poetry in the idea formulation—the abstraction of movement with imaginative use of materials.”
Altenau is a junior architect at Eight Inc. and Coffman is a LEED accredited designer who has worked with local firms such as Stephen Green Architecture and Green Sand Inc. As winners, the duo scores a $1,500 cash prize, and their design will be refined and built this summer, in time to be used by the opening of Ballet Hawaii’s fall season in August.
