A Century of Care with Palama Settlement

This month marks the 100th anniversary of local nonprofit Palama Settlement’s incorporation. Founded in 1896 as the Palama Chapel, the settlement later blossomed into a social-service agency, with a day camp for children with tuberculosis, a night school, low-rent housing and a nursing department. Today, the settlement continues to offer healthcare, food, clothing and housing assistance to Palama and Kalihi residents. It’s also expanded—thousands of youth have participated in Palama's athletic programs, and education and technology classes are now taught at the center. Palama Settlement celebrates the milestone on Nov. 20 with Malama Palama: Festival of 100 Voices. “We’d really like people to come back and visit their roots, see what’s new at Palama, and have a really fun day,” says executive director Jean Evans.
