2026 Hale ‘Aina Awards: It’s a Tasty Late Night in Mō‘ili‘ili at Khan Skewer Restaurant

Dining options narrow fast in Honolulu after 10 p.m. Luckily, there’s Khan Skewer Restaurant, open until 1 a.m. Thursdays to Sundays and 11 p.m. the rest of the week. The specialties? Spicy skewers, Mongolian-inspired stir-fry and plenty of beer, sake and soju.
On a recent late-night outing, our bellies (and hearts) were full after plates of sliced braised beef atop cucumber salad, diced century egg and tofu in shoyu chile oil, salt-and-pepper corn on the cob, flaky green onion pancakes, spicy shrimp and pork wontons, garlic scallops with vermicelli—and that’s just for starters.
The stars of the show are the skewers. They come in quantities of three or five, so if you know what you like, ordering five saves you a couple of bucks. For the less adventurous, there are lean sticks of beef, lamb, chicken wings and assorted veggies.
The eggplant, Maui venison and pork belly with enoki mushrooms are musts. Your wilder side will want the grilled beef tendon, chicken hearts and pork intestine. Khan’s two dips reflect its mix of patrons: one’s a milder pineapple-apple sauce with Thai chile, the other is a lively dry rub of Sichuan peppercorns, cumin and chile powder.
Skewers stay warm, thanks to tea candles beneath a metal tray and a cute warming station at your table—which gives us plenty of time for drinks, including a build-your-own DIY dispenser filled with four bottles of beer (Heineken, Sapporo or Maui Bikini Blonde), a bottle of soju (in strawberry, yogurt and a dozen other flavors), plus fresh fruits and citrus—all mixed together—for $38.99. A nonalcoholic version is $25.99.
Dessert is fun and complimentary with the meal: fluffy snow ice topped with Frosted Flakes and your choice of syrup. Tonight’s options are peach, brown sugar or chocolate. We opt for brown sugar—and plenty more late-night visits here.
