A successful spine surgery is about far more than correcting anatomy; it’s about restoring mobility, relieving pain, and helping patients return to the lives they value most. For Dr. Kyle A. Mitsunaga, that impact is what drives his work as a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon caring for both adult and pediatric patients.

With 15 years of experience, Dr. Mitsunaga brings a rare breadth of expertise, treating spinal conditions across the entire life spectrum, including everything from congenital deformities in infants to complex degenerative disorders in older adults. This dual specialization allows him to combine the precision required for delicate, growing spines with the advanced techniques needed to address challenging adult conditions.

A graduate of Punahou School, Dr. Mitsunaga earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UC Davis Medical Center, followed by advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco—two of the nation’s leading programs. He is also a member of Queen’s University Medical Group (QUMG), further strengthening his connection to Hawai‘i’s leading healthcare network.

At the forefront of modern spine care, Dr. Mitsunaga incorporates robotic-assisted surgery, advanced navigation systems, and minimally invasive techniques into his practice. These innovations allow for greater surgical precision, less blood loss, and faster recovery, with many procedures now safely performed on an outpatient basis.

Equally important is his patient-centered philosophy. Dr. Mitsunaga takes the time to listen, educate, and guide patients through both surgical and non-surgical options, fostering trust and shared decision-making. Through a combination of innovation, experience, and compassion, he continues to elevate spine care across Hawai‘i.
