The beloved hotel, which has been a destination for visitors and local residents for more than six decades, was first opened in May 1964 by local entrepreneur Herbert T. Hayashi (H.T. Hayashi). In 2022, Rycroft Holdings purchased the property from developer Peter Savio. (Rycroft Holdings is headed up by Robert Kurisu, son of Duane Kurisu, HONOLULU’s owner.)

Throughout its history, locals have gathered at the 199-room, 12-story hotel in the Ala Moana area for celebrations, events and family meals. In its new chapter, Pagoda pays homage to this legacy while introducing refreshed spaces designed for both travelers and kamaʻāina. “The Pagoda has always been a place to talk story, celebrate milestones, and feel at home,” Robert Kurisu says. “We’ve simply reimagined that experience with a modern aesthetic while preserving what makes the Pagoda, the friendliest address of aloha.”

The property-wide refresh, led by The Vanguard Theory and Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc., features new guest rooms with contemporary, island-inspired interiors and upgraded furnishings, along with artwork by local artist Lauren Trangmar. The iconic koi ponds, filled with more than 200 koi, also have been restored, and many exterior updates have been made that complement the hotel’s original architecture. The lobby now features an art wall developed by Zak Noyle that showcases works by Margaret Rice, Nick Kuchar and Punky Aloha, alongside archival imagery that pays homage to Pagoda’s past. Despite many new features, developers made sure to keep Pagoda’s character intact. As such, the hotel’s 20 pagoda-style lanterns and Japanese-inspired gardens remain.

Although no date has been announced, one of the exciting developments is Rainbow Drive-In taking over the floating restaurant and serving its popular lineup of local dishes.
