Though it may not garner as much attention as some of Hawai‘i’s other artistries, quilting has a rich history in the Islands that dates all the way back to the 19th century. Today, one of the best ways to view locally crafted quilts is via the Hawai‘i Quilt Guild, also known as Na Po‘e Humukuiki O Hawai‘i. Founded in 1984, the nonprofit is dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditions and culture of quilting, and its annual quilt show is the largest of its kind in Hawai‘i.

On view from May 1 to May 11 at the Nā Lama Kukui design center in Honolulu, the guild’s 2025 show was themed “Lucky We Live Hawai‘i” and featured a wide variety of techniques and styles, ranging from traditional Hawaiian motifs and pictorial nature scenes to Japanese sashiko and intricate pieced designs. The show also celebrated the talents of featured quilter and Hawai‘i Quilt Guild president Carla Simao (below left).
