Joseph C. Varcadipane
A successful surgery is about far more than what happens on the operating table. For Dr. Joseph Varcadipane, it’s also about making sure his patients are happy. Dr. Varcadipane specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, from primary (“first-time”) to revision (“re-do”) surgeries, he has spent a decade delivering outstanding results. Starting from the very first visit to the last day of their post-op recovery period, the level of care he and his team offer is what sets his practice apart from others. “I care a lot about my patients,” he says. “In five years, I want to be able to help more people than I can today and be more efficient and better in all the ways I can be.”
To do this, Dr. Varcadipane is constantly exploring new advancements and technology that could lead to better patient outcomes and care. He was the first surgeon in Hawai‘i to introduce HipInsight, an augmented reality-based navigation system that allows surgeons to better plan and more accurately place orthopedic implants. The addition of robotic-assisted surgery, a breakthrough tool in orthopedics, in the operating room has allowed Dr. Varcadipane to achieve an even higher level of accuracy that can help improve the function, feel and potential longevity of joint replacements. When it comes to surgery, “I’m a bit of a perfectionist,” he admits. While absolute perfection is not always possible, it’s this strive for excellence that has led to consistently great outcomes for his patients.
During his two fellowships, the UMDNJ – Rutgers Medical School graduate trained under internationally acclaimed surgeons Dr. Joel Matta and Dr. Edward J. McPherson, both considered masters in their respective fields in orthopedics. The experience and mentorship gained under their wing have shaped Dr. Varcadipane into the surgeon he is today and given him the skillset to treat some of the most challenging orthopedic cases on the island.
