Hugo Higa, M.D. is a dual-trained Ophthalmologist and Oculofacial Surgeon who has been practicing in Hawai‘i since 1998.

Dr. Higa received his B.S. in Biology at UCLA, and his M.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following his internship year at the University of Hawai‘i, he returned to Madison to complete his Ophthalmology studies. He then moved to Australia where he completed his fellowship training in Corneal Surgery/External Diseases and Oculoplastic/Orbital Surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria.

As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Higa offers eye care to preserve his patients’ vision – from regular eye exams to treatment for cataracts, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, glaucoma, and other eye diseases, as well as injuries to the eye.

As an Oculofacial Surgeon, Dr. Higa believes in helping his patients look and feel their best at any age through surgical and non-surgical procedures. He expanded the cosmetic side of his practice when many of his patients commented how old they looked after their vision improved. Some of the most common complaints are droopy eyelids and brows, eye bags, saggy skin, and wrinkles. Dr. Higa offers many treatment options for excellent, natural-looking results to help his patients look their best – more youthful, rested, and attractive.

Dr. Higa is honored to have been appointed Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the John A Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). This volunteer appointment was recommended by a committee of Dr. Higa’s peers in the department. He is also a dedicated member of the Kamehameha Lions Club and actively collects, cleans, and sorts glasses for donation to needy communities around the world. He often participates in community talks, health fairs, and seminars on aging eye health and cosmetic procedures, and also holds regular continuing education seminars for local optometrists.

Dr. Higa has recently partnered with ophthalmologist Andrew Parlin, M.D. to form Island Ophthalmology Partners. They have offices at the Pan Am Building and Pali Momi Medical Center.

In his limited free time, Dr. Higa enjoys surf foiling, spending time with his family and dog, Coco, and is an avid “Trekkie.”
