Tooling Around at Home Depot’s Kids’ Workshops

I normally dread the semi-monthly ritual of dragging our kids to Iwilei for errands in the big-box stores, just because it’s only a matter of time before someone in the family is having a meltdown in the parking lot (sometimes, it’s me). On a recent Saturday, my husband and I needed to buy parts to install a ceiling fan. What could possibly be more boring? As we pulled into Home Depot, I braced myself for the whining to begin.

That is, until we stumbled upon the kids’ workshop happening in the parking lot. Families were sprawled out on provided mats within a closed-off area, happily hammering away on wooden toy race cars. A giant raceway was set up to send their creations zooming down the track. Our kids begged to go in.

Suddenly, our lackluster errand had turned into a fun little diversion. Upon entering, the kids were given a free orange apron to wear, along with their own race car kits and instructions. We found an open mat with hammers and glue provided for us, and got to work.

The workshops are geared towards 5 to 12 year-olds, but younger ones are welcome. My daughter, who is 5, was able to do most of it herself. My 3-year-old son needed extra help, but was so excited to participate. I also loved seeing so many Dads getting into it (my husband included).

All Home Depot locations hold the workshops on the first Saturday of every month. They’re free, you don’t need to pre-register, and you can show up any time between 9 a.m. and noon. The projects vary every month. This Saturday, kids can build and paint their own customized birdfeeders. In coming months, look for activities based on the movies Epic and Despicable Me 2.

After completing the project, the kids got a certificate of achievement and a commemorative pin to place on their aprons. They were so proud of their finished products and new DIY skills. My success was completing our shopping trip for ceiling fan parts with no complaints.

This week, April 6, kids will be building and painting their own birdfeeders. Home Depot kids’ workshops are free the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon at all locations. You can pre-register online, but it’s not required. For more info, click here
