5 Fun Facts about Japan Sweets Fair
(Sponsored) Japan Sweets Fair took place this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
HONOLULU Magazine stopped by the ABC Store at Ala Moana Center this past Saturday for Eiwa Confectionery Co.’s Japan Sweets Fair. During the three-day tasting event, the brand showcased some of Japan’s most delectable sweet and savory snacks and doled out samples for shoppers to try.
1. Locals love Japanese candy—especially when it’s free.
The event drew quite a crowd, mostly shoppers passing by who wanted to try samples. (Hey, we love free stuff, too.)
2. Sometimes, it’s totally OK to play with your food.
Part toy, part candy, this novelty washing machine lets you use stickers to customize your own face. Then, create a delicious yogurt-flavored foam inside, using some water and the included crystals.
3. Meet Black Thunder, Japan’s no. 1-selling candy bar.

You may have never heard of it, but Black Thunder is considered Japan’s no. 1-selling chocolate bar. Made with crushed plain and cocoa biscuits covered in milk chocolate, this treat can be found in almost any major convenience store in Japan. Its brother, Big Thunder, a cocoa biscuit covered in milk chocolate, ain’t bad, either. |
4. Hello Kitty-packaged marshmallows are irresistibly adorable.
These Hello Kitty marshmallows, in flavors of chocolate, mango, pineapple and strawberry, were deemed a hit. We’re not surprised.
5. Japan’s cracker game is on point.
While we loved everything we tried, it was the crackers—savory, light and addicting—that kept us coming back to sample.
While there, a rep for Japan-brand Eiwa Confectionery Co. explained the company was considering distribution in Hawai‘i and this was its way of testing the water. Throughout the event, tasters were invited to fill out surveys on the products. Based on the responses, we think it’s safe to say Japan Sweets Fair was a huge success. Will these treats make their way onto local supermarket shelves? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we’ll be dreaming about Japan.
