Fairs & Expos
Makahiki Kuilima
Each year, this festival shares Hawaiian traditions, values and practices through games and demonstrations. Want to come prepared? Here are some tips on how to perfect your ulu maika game:
- Visualize the rock rolling between the stakes.
- Bend your knees and keep your body parallel to the intended path of your rock.
- Cradle the rock between your pinky and thumb—don’t just toss it.
- Let go in a fluid motion. Follow through by extending your arm.
- Pray to Lono.
8 a.m.–4 p.m., January 11, free, Turtle Bay Resort, 57-091 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku, sites.google.com/site/makahikikuilima, makahiki.kuilima@gmail.com.
Theater & Arts
The Odd Couple (female version)
“The script is not exactly the same [as the male version]. It’s geared toward women. There are some things that strike me as odd—in the male version they’re playing poker; [in the female version] the women are playing Trivial Pursuit, which puts it strictly in the ’80s, and it’s hard to take it out of that.”
—Betty Burdick, director
