Things to do in February
This month is devoted to the arts: Taiko drumming, a stand-up comedian, African textiles, a French opera and a film festival honoring Black History Month.
Leading Ladies
Feb. 1–17
Set in the 1950s, this play tells the story of Leo and Jack, down-and-out actors. When they hear an old lady is about to leave her fortune to her two long-lost nephews, they take on the ultimate role. Turns out, the nephews are nieces. Still, the men arrive in town in character.

Command Performance: Kuba Cloths
from Central Africa
Feb. 7 to July 21
The people of the Kuba kingdom, now the Democratic Republic
of Congo, were referred to as the “people of the cloth.” Visit the Honolulu Museum of Art for an exhibition featuring 25 of these intricate fabrics.

It’s the first Hawaii Opera Theatre performance of 2013; this one’s a 1956 French opera (performed in English) in three acts, by Francis Poulenc.

Honolulu African American Film Festival
Feb. 16–23
In honor of Black History Month, head down to Doris Duke Theatre. Not only will there be films, but each screening features guest speakers and performers, including a concert with musician Chuck James on the festival’s closing night. Tickets are $25
