Raw Sugar Factory
|
A Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar bulldozer pushes raw sugar onto an underground conveyor belt, sending the sweet cargo on its way to container ships in Kahului Harbor. The state’s only remaining sugar grower, HC&S produced more than 170,000 tons of raw sugar last year. The factory also creates its own power using bagasse, a fibrous byproduct of sugar production. Excess power goes to Maui’s electrical grid—the company provides about 6 percent of the island’s power.
