Kokua Kalihi Valley Celebrates National Health Center Week

Learn about health care reform, the art of storytelling, how to grow your own veggies and more.

This week, celebrate National Health Center Week with events and demonstrations at Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services (KKV). The 38-year-old Health and Human Services nonprofit joins more than 1,200 community health centers across the nation; these centers and thousands like it provide care to more than 20 million people in the U.S.

“At KKV we emphasize the community in community health center and we believe that community health is essential to individual and family health,” said Kokua Kalihi Valley executive director, Dr. David Derauf.

To honor the work of the center and its services, KKV has planned something for everyone, whether you’re in search of a job, want to grow your own food or spend the day with the kids.

Today, KKV staff will be at Hooulu Aina, in the Kalihi Valley Nature preserve (free transportation from KKV is provided). Visitors can learn how to make “container gardens” and watch cooking demonstrations using the fruits and veggies they can grow.

A community march will take place Tuesday at the Kuhio Park Terrace, where marchers can learn more about local businesses and the community services they provide.

On Wednesday, learn about the job market and network with community members.

On Thursday, it’s all about the keiki at the KKV clinic with storytelling and hands-on art projects.

Kokua Kalihi Valley will end the National Health Center week festivities with food booths, art displays, massages and a tour of the center’s renovated facilities.
