6 Ways to Have a Stylish, Fun and Fashion-Filled Weekend

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

Apply

Work It

What: Hawai‘i’s got talent. First Ari, then Kini—who’s next? Project Runway is now officially casting for a new season of stylish, grassroots tastemakers, and we would love to see more of our homegrown talent on the show. So if you’re an Islander with a vision—we know this state is full of them!—get over to bmpcasting.com to submit your online application. We all know what’s at stake here, but just in case you need a reminder: Winners of the show get a chance to showcase their work at New York Fashion Week and $100,000 to start or expand their line.

When: The application deadline is March 16.

Where: bmpcasting.com

Details: Email prcasting@bunim-murray.com for more information.

Flea Smitten

What: The aloha spirit is alive and well in the Islands, and if you don’t believe us, just go check out the Honolulu Festival. This year’s theme is “Creating Cultural Friendships with Aloha” and will feature food, workshops, performances and even shopping. Art and Flea, one of our favorite places to find under-the-radar local clothes and gorgeous handmade jewelry, will be at the event, which means you’ll be able to show your closet just how much aloha you have for it.

When: Saturday. March 7, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Sunday, March 8, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Where: Hawai‘i Convention Center

Details: Visit honolulufestival.com for more information.

Attend

What’s Up, Buttefly?

What: Ah, butterflies. One of the few insects that don’t give us the heebie-jeebies. In fact, put us in a room full of them—they’re downright magical. Pearlridge wants to do just that at this year’s butterfly conservatory, where the butterflies are all from Maui or O‘ahu. You’ll be able to see the life cycle of these creatures, from egg to butterfly, and, if you’re lucky, one of the grown ones may even perch on you for a sweet photo op.

When: March 7 through April 4. Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Where: Pearlridge Center

Details: $3 per person. Children under 8 years old are free with a paying adult.

Attend

Om, Sweet Om

What: You’re always promising to slow down. Then, the next thing you know, you’re taking on another initiative at work, planning a family vacation to Disneyland and starting a massive kitchen-remodeling project. You need to seriously stop and focus on you. Get some help at Chai Studio’s new meditation workshop, where you’ll learn to incorporate meditation techniques in your busy schedule. You’ll get some background info on the practice, refreshments and a beautiful 100-percent-cotton meditation pouf, i.e., a super soft cushion that will keep your zen tush comfy.

When: Sunday, March 8 at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.

Where: Chai Studio, Ward Village Shops

Details: Cost is $185 and includes a pouf of your choice. They come in hand-woven block print or kantha fabric.

Wet Feels

What: Some freebies are so good, they’re worth taking a couple vacation days and going on a mini staycation to Maui. This is one of them. Love and Water (if you haven’t checked out the Instagram of swimming, floating, drifting couples, do it. We love gazing at the dreamy seascape.) and Opihi Love are teaming up to offer one pair of true lovers a photo shoot with all the bells and whistles. We’re talking a gown to wear, flowers, professional hair and makeup, and one hour of shooting.

When: The winner will be selected on March 9 at noon.

Where: This is a Maui photo shoot.

Details: To enter, like the giveaway photo on the Opihi Love Instagram and tag two or more friends in the comments. Then, post a picture of you and your loved one and hashtag #opihilovewater.

Watch

I Am Robot

What: We fell in love to second we saw Neill Blomkamp’s little robot creation squeak “I am Chappie” in the latest preview of his new film Chappie. Blomkamp’s District 9 was smart and powerful, and his latest, Elysium, was visually stunning, so you know you’ll be able to expect good things from this South African filmmaker with a penchant for hard-hitting social issues and serious sci-fi. Oh, and he’ll be making the next Alien film as well. No big deal. (Such a big deal.)

When: Chappie opened in Hawai‘i theaters last night.

Details: Blomkamp’s had robots on the mind for years. Check out some of his old short works here.
