5 Valentine’s Day Ideas If You’re Flying Solo
What to do when you’re single, from hikes to free chicken.
That bittersweet time of year is coming up where everyone else seems to have dinner reservations locked down and surprise flower deliveries arranged—everyone except for you. But, dear single, you have not been forgotten. Here is your guide to making your Valentine’s Day just as sweet.
1. Retail therapy
Don’t wait till Sunday. Go ahead and treat yourself to some shopping on Friday. Head down to Homecoming Honolulu’s Valentine’s party. There will be drinks and treats, and you can score sweet deals on discounted items. Bring a friend or four.
Feb. 12, 5 to 8 p.m., Homecoming Honolulu, 12 S. King St., 536-6000, shophomecominghonolulu.com.
2. Take a hike
Show your body some love and get physical outside with a hike. We suggest the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail. It’s an easy three-mile round trip, paved hike with gorgeous views of the Ka Iwi shoreline and that deep blue sea (and, if you’re lucky, some humpback whales). It’s a refreshing and calming way to spend your morning.
Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail, on Kalaniana‘ole Highway past Sandy Beach and before Makapu‘u Beach Park.
3. Singles day club
Hey single, want to mingle? Round up your squad and hit up The Modern Honolulu’s Sexy Singles Day Club. This poolside party will be a happening spot to enjoy the afternoon, and who knows? Maybe sparks will fly with a cutie you meet there. There will also be a pop-up shop by swimwear brand Bikini Bird. If you want to reserve a poolside daybed, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Feb. 14, noon to 6 p.m., $10 cover for outside guests, free for hotel guests, Sunset Pool at The Modern Honolulu, 1775 Ala Moana Blvd., 450-3379, themodernhonolulu.com.
4. Free chicken wings (courtesy of your ex)
Went through a bad breakup recently? Well, you can still get something out of that breakup. Specifically, chicken wings. All you have to do is bring your ex’s photo to Hooter’s of Honolulu where you can shred it to pieces, and when you buy 10 chicken wings, you’ll get another 10 for free.
Feb. 14, 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Hooters of Honolulu, 1 Aloha Tower Drive, 524-4668, hooters.com.
5. Netflix and Chill
You deserve a break. Catch up with the latest flicks on Netflix or TV. Netflix has been getting new movies and TV shows added on (and, hey, new episodes of Mad Men are up, in case you missed it while it was on TV) and AMC’s The Walking Dead returns on Sunday at 9 p.m. Central Time, just in time for Daryl Dixon to be your valentine.
Bottom line: Don’t sweat it. It’s a day about love so do something you enjoy. And if all else fails, don’t forget that the day after Valentine’s is when all those chocolates at the store go on sale.
