Eat, kayak, love.

Start at the Kalapawai Market near Kailua Beach to pick up some fresh deli sandwiches for lunch on the beach and fuel up with some java and freshly baked poi banana bread. Walk across the street to the Kailua Beach Adventures store, rent a double kayak for a half day and use a kayak cart to drag it to Kailua Beach. Secure your sammies, water and belongings in a dry bag and start your journey to the Mokulua island on the left. The 2.5-mile journey, in good wind and swell conditions, should take around 45 minutes. Dock your kayak on the beach toward the right side of the island and reward yourselves with lunch and some sun on the beach. Kayak back to Kailua Beach, rinse off at the showers and return the kayak before sunset.

For dinner, support the local family behind Kalapawai Café at its Kailua Town location and get a taste of some of the best small-family wineries and local breweries on the island. Nestled at the entrance of Kailua Town, the casual and quaint restaurant features locally sourced ingredients with the owner’s favorite marinated island tomato and chèvre bruschetta, curried “Shephard’s Pie” with Nalo greens and auction-fresh fish with a lemongrass risotto.
