5 New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 Trends To Try Now In Honolulu
Fresh off of New York Fashion Week, HONOLULU Magazine managing fashion editor Brie Thalmann shares a few of her favorite trends.
1. The Bold Shoulder

The Breakdown: After traipsing in the tropics her last few seasons, Mara Hoffman headed west for SS16. With Willie Nelson on the stereo, models strode out in front of a blue sky and cornfield backdrop, sporting mile-long braids, bandanas and a mix of breezy, shoulder-revealing fashions, including a vibrant leaf-print shirtdress, a pastel-striped jumpsuit and a crisp strapless crop top smartly paired with suspender-clad trousers.
2. Street-Chic Jackets

The Breakdown: In a nod to street culture, Tam’s SS16 collection included a lust-worthy array of statement bomber jackets. Skillfully blending masculine with feminine, Tam paired the style’s classic striped, ribbed trims with fresh details, such as techno mesh, hand embroidery and floral and dragon motifs.
Note: The polished presentation was directed by Hawai‘i’s own Lynne O’Neill, who will be directing this November’s HONOLULU Fashion Week.
3. Easy Glamour

The Breakdown: While there was no shortage of glamorous, figure-skimming dresses at Hervé Léger’s 30th anniversary show, my favorite pieces came in the form of the less expected: a sheer black floor-length tunic trimmed with swingy fringe, an exquisitely embellished white moto jacket and a one-piece wonder of a jumpsuit, in understated nude prettied up with softly flounced sleeves.
4. Out-of-This World Prints

The Breakdown: Inspired by Star City, the secret 1960s Soviet Union cosmonaut training base, cool-girl favorite Karen Walker merged her signature folksy aesthetic with utilitarian details and glam finishes. Must-haves include her topstitched denim jumpsuits, gilded separates and the collections cluster of playful star prints. In burnt orange and gold, they touched down on floaty dresses, bomber jackets and fitted sweaters for a stellar dose of whimsy.
5. Graphic Jams

The Breakdown: Styled by Hilo-native and HONOLULU Fashion Week stylist Don Sumada, this lively collective showcase featured the latest from four Hong Kong labels. Stealing our attention, Injury’s The Game Has Changed collection featured head-turning graphic styles, including a bold, kaleidoscope dress-coat combo, a calf-length graphic-print bomber, plus an assortment of amazing, conceptual sunglasses, a collaboration with eyewear label Battila.
